Like any large city, Atlanta has some interesting neighborhoods; one of the most well known is Virginia-Highland, offering plenty of boutiques, bookstores, bistros and lively bars.
Two of the city’s biggest attractions feature names that every visitor is familiar with. The CNN studio tour offers a fascinating behind the scenes tour of the world’s largest news network, interactive exhibits and the chance to read the news yourself. The World of Coca Cola provides a behind the scenes look at the world’s best selling soft drink, with exhibits, advertising memorabilia and an art gallery. Atlanta has dozens of more conventional museums, including the High Museum of Art, the Children’s Museum and the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum. The city played a major role in the war between the states, and one of the best places to appreciate this role is at the Civil War Museum and Cyclorama, a huge 42 feet high, 360 degree cylindrical oil painting.
Many visitors come here to follow in the footsteps of Margaret Mitchell, the author of the classic book Gone With the Wind. Mitchell lived in a house on 10th Street for several years, and the site is now a museum. The main library has a permanent exhibition on the author, and the display includes her typewriter and her Pulitzer Prize. There is a sculpture representing the columns of the plantation house Tara in nearby Peachtree Street, and you can also see Mitchell’s grave in the historic Oakland cemetery, along with the graves of other well known residents. Another famous resident was Martin Luther King Jr, and King’s birthplace, along with the church where he preached, are now part of a National Historic Site commemorating his life and work.
